AI helpers and AI tools
AI in Fettlecode is off until an admin turns it on, uses a provider you choose, and only ever suggests. People decide what to use. Nothing is trained on your code.
AI helpers on changes
When AI is on, a change offers:
- Summarise revision N: a short description of what the change does, with anything worth a careful look pointed out.
- Suggest a split into a stack, for a large change: a possible stack of smaller changes, with which files go in each and how to make them with Git.
- Draft a reply in a discussion, for you to edit and post (or not).
They're all marked Suggestions only: check them against the code.
A repository admin can turn the helpers off for one repository in its Settings (untick AI helpers on changes).
Turning AI on (instance admins)
In Your settings → This Fettlecode → AI helpers, choose a provider:
- Claude (Anthropic API): an API key from Anthropic, and the model. A gateway address is optional, for a company proxy.
- An OpenAI-compatible server of your own, such as Ollama, LM Studio or vLLM: its server address, the model, and an API key if the server needs one. Your code then never leaves your network.
Set Requests a day, across everyone to cap costs. Saving turns the helpers on for every repository that hasn't turned them off. Turning AI off for everyone forgets the key.
A model server on your own network (such as http://192.168.1.20:11434) needs INTEGRATIONS_ALLOW_PRIVATE=true.
AI tools (MCP)
Fettlecode has an MCP server, so AI tools such as Claude, code editors and agents can read repositories, changes and discussions, and comment and reply. They act as the person whose token they use, with that person's access and nothing more, and they can't approve, merge or push.
- An instance admin ticks Allow AI tools to connect in Your settings → This Fettlecode → AI tools (MCP).
- Each person makes a personal access token and adds the server to their tool. The panel shows the address. For Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http fettlecode https://code.example.com/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <your token>"
